An acoustical method of predicting permeability of orthotropic fibers

Abstract

An acoustical method of predicting permeability of orthotropic fibers is presented. The acoustical method uses standardized impedance tube measurement as per ASTM E 1050. Absoprtion coefficient, Reflection coefficient and Impedance ratio are first measured using the impedance tube. Reverse calculation of these acoustical properties yield flow resistivity that is inverse of permeability. The method can measure, glass, carbon and hybrid lay ups of differing porosity values with ease. The impedance tube can be utilized to measure longitudinal and transverse permeability using the method described. Sized and unsized fibers are measured using this technique. Negligible variation in permeability is found due to the absence of sizing.
