Abstract
This january 2009 issue of Division of Analytical Chemistry (DAC) reveals about recent activities of the DAC and details regarding the major analytical chemistry event in the year 2009 in Europe. The global financial crisis is affecting all branches of chemistry, but analytical chemistry in particular since it is by tradition has many close links to industry. Manfred Grasserbauer reveals about the present key issues for sustainable development as the management of natural resources, climate change and clean energy, and global poverty and development co-operation. Analytical sciences have a particularly important role in assessing the 'greenhouse gas problem' and monitoring global change. DAC has welcomed the Division of Inorganic Chemistry and the Division of Organic Chemistry as new divisions of EuCheMS.
