N2 - The present paper aims at modelling the catchment of Jijia River, situated in eastern Romania, and designing control structures for the reservoirs' inventories by manipulating their outflow gates. The model includes the main river, several main tributaries and five reservoirs. A simplified graph-like conceptual model is used as the backbone for the description of the real catchment. The Saint Venant equations are used to simulate water flow in the river basin. They are associated to equations for mass balance of water accumulation in the reservoirs. The model for the Jijia catchment is created using hydrodynamic equations. Real data of the reservoirs and river reaches is used to fit the model. Using adequate traditional and advanced control techniques, the outflow of each reservoir is manipulated in such a way to maintain the water level to a safe value and minimize the likelihood of flood occurrence in the downstream river reach.
