Abstract

Deposits of fluorspar mine waste in the Peak District and Weardale contain high concentrations of lead, zinc and fluoride. The flora naturally established on these sites is described. Analysis of leaves and roots shows of fluoride ranging between 100 and 10, 000 μg F/g dry wt. Concentrations of this magnitude have not been reported previously in the UK where fluoride has been derived from the soil. The uptake, accumulation and nature of these fluoride compounds is discussed.
