Abstract
This chapter introduces elementary concepts in disease modeling and lays thefoundation for the other chapters. The chapter introduces the concept of positivityof solutions to ensure that the dynamics of the model make biological sense for allt ≤ 0. Epidemiological and immunological investigations do not necessarily requireexact solutions to the model equations which are usually nonlinear. A very importantthreshold called the reproduction number or reproduction ration is calculated andthis number is used to determine the stability of equilibria. The chapter illustrates theconcepts with an example from immunology.
