Abstract
The transversal field in straight pipes is due to nascent second normal stress differences when the contour of the flow domain starts deviating slightly from the circular. In general particles cannot follow straight pathlines in the pressure gradient driven flow of a viscoelastic fluid in a conduit with a cross-section other than circular except when the apparent viscosity and the second normal stress function satisfy certain relationships independently of any constitutive assumptions.
