Abstract

Contemporary fluorspar mining operations accommodate metalliferous residues within the confines of tailings dams. However, dewatering of the system provides a highly mobile surface susceptible to wind and water erosion. Revegetation is the most permanent method of controlling erosion and also facilitates the integration of the system into the surrounding landscape. This paper assesses some of the commercially-available stabilisers for direct hydraulic seeding onto tailings surfaces and slopes. Stabiliser-mulch combinations were tested under glasshouse, controlled-environment and field conditions on the growth of a grass/forb mixture.
